John McAndrew CV  (Project Experience)

John McAndrew has extensive experience in the design of cooling water systems, pumping stations, and associated plant for both Power Stations and Major Water Supply Projects including production of associated specifications. His experience includes feasibility studies, specification of plant and equipment, hydraulic design and waterhammer studies of all types of pumping systems including power station feed and condensate pumping systems.

  • Eraring Power Station hydraulic design of Unit 4 Generator Transformer Oil Cooler circuits. (2013)

  • Vales Point Power Station  Complete specification for LP and HP heaters (2013)

  • Mardi Pumping Station- review of pumping station design, pump impellers and pipework layout (2011)

  • Eraring Power Station LP Heaters- review of additional materials for re-tubing

  • Olifants River Pumping Scheme. Preliminary hydraulic design, calculation of pump head,  and preliminary waterhammer study for the South Africa Olifants River water supply scheme for the Steelpoort and Flag Boshielo Systems. These systems involve four pumping stations and long overland pipelines of length 140 km. Pipeline size up to 1.7m diameter. (2011 to 2012).

  • Callide "A" Power Station in Queensland. Hydraulic analysis and waterhammer study of the existing condensate pumping system, as part of a carbon-capture project. (2010)

  • Eraring Power Station (NSW) new auxiliary cooling towers and associated plant This work involved investigation, hydraulic design work, specification of the new cooling towers, and chemical dosing system, and engineering support during construction.  (Project value $10m). (2006 to 2007).

  • Eraring Power Station Attemperating Pumping Station 20 m3/s Conceptual and hydraulic design of pumping station, calculation of pump head, and specification of pumps and mechanical plant. Overall value of project $70m. (2006).

  • Eraring Power Station effluent pumping system This involved the investigation of existing pump failures, the associated hydraulic design, a recommendation for new pumping plant, and a specification for the works. (2010).

  • Munmorah Power Station (NSW) circulating water system, calculation of pump head, and hydraulic review of the current performance using AFT Fathom computer programme. ($26K consultancy). (2009)

  • Bayswater Power Station new River Pumping System 10 m3/s, and 2 km pipeline rising main. – Specification of pumping plant, hydraulic design of pumping station and pipeline system, and waterhammer analysis. Overall value of project $70m. (2008).

  • Liddell Power Station Specification for the supply of condenser tubes (2008)

  • Prospect Reservoir Raw Water Pumping Station 16 m3/s – Hydraulic design of pumping station, specification of pumping plant, hydraulic design of pumping system, and waterhammer analysis.  Project value $65m. (2006)

  • Antiene Coal Unloader, investigation of poor performance of sump pumping system, resulting in the provision of uprated pump impellers and operational changes. (2006)

  • Bluewaters Power Station Circulating Water and Auxiliary Cooling Water Systems. Flow rate 6 m3/s per unit. Investigation, specification of pumping plant, hydraulic design of circulating water and auxiliary system, and waterhammer analysis. (2005)

  • ANSTO new Reactor Secondary Cooling System, waterhammer analysis to estimate surge pressures. This is for the secondary cooling system which is cooled by cooling towers. (2005)

  • Bayswater Power Station, Investigation for new Deaerator level control valve.

  • Bayswater Power Station hydraulic analysis of condensate and feed pumping systems to determine the capability of operating at increased output up to 750 MW. (2004)

  • Vales Point Power Station Main Condenser retubing options report (2003).

  •  Callide Power Station Feed Pump Vibration Investigation. A short investigation to determine the cause of feed pump vibration. (2003)

  •  Metrogrid City Tunnel (power supply tunnel)  - Design and specification of two small drainage pumping stations to act as emergency back-up to the existing pumping systems. (2003).

  •  Queensland Alumina - Design of condensate pumping system. This was for an proposed upgrade of the condensate pumping system. (2003)

  • Provision of training modules for Tarong North Power Station. These were power point based training modules covering about 30 areas of plant. (2003)

  • Strathclyde Whitewater Canoe Slalom Course -Conceptual design of pumping station, based on our design for the Sydney Whitewater Stadium. (2003)

  • Tallawarra Power Station- Sewage and Water Supply Pumping Projects. A range of small pumping and water supply projects relating to early work on the site development. (2003)

  • Rouse Hill Water Supply -Waterhammer analysis for Rising Main. This system was a pumping station with 6 pumps and a 12 km rising main.(2003)

  • New Caledonia -Koniambo Nickel Project.  Design of Seawater Pumping Station including its intake, de-aerator and ocean outfall hydraulic design. (2003)

  • Hatch Consulting- Design of Quench Tank Cooling Water Systems. This plant consisted of three cooling systems for the continuous strip production mill, with associated cooling towers (2002)


2003 to 2015  Pacific Power International
Position Held: Specialist Engineer, Cooling Water and Pumping Plant.
Major Projects include:

  • QAL Gladstone Economisers Retrofit Proposal. Design of pumping system to boost through new economiser plant. (2002)

  • Tarong North Power Station (2002) Emergency diesel generator. Administration of contract.

  • Liddell Power Station Ash Dam pump replacement. Design and specification of new 150mm pumping plant. (2001).

  • BHP Port Kembla Life extension investigation. Costings provided for pumping and seawater cooling water plant. (2001).

  • Tarong North Power Station. Hydraulic design of main cooling water (11,200 L/s) and auxiliary cooling water (200 L/s) systems, involving investigation, design, calculation of pump head, writing of specification for pumping plant and waterhammer analysis.(2000)

  • Assistance with Australian and overseas Power Projects (1998 to 2002)

  • Callide Power Station Units 3 and 4. Design of main cooling water system (10,600 L/s per unit) and auxiliary cooling water system (400 L/s per unit), involving investigation, design, calculation of pump head, writing of specification for pumping plant and waterhammer analysis (1999). 

  • Penrith Whitewater Stadium (Canoe Slalom Course) Hydraulic investigation of pumping station, calculation of pump head, and Specification of Pumps and Pumping Station, and administration of pump contract (1998).

  • Burrinjuck new 15 MW Hydro Power Station and refurbishment of two existing 6 MW units and associated electrical equipment Production of specification, managing the team involving co-ordinating inputs from others (1997).

  • Vales Point Power Station Seawater Auxiliary Cooling System Hydraulic analysis, and specification of replacement oil coolers. The aim was to avoid oil leakage to the lake (1997).

  • Vales Point Power Station replacement seawater Generator Transformer Oil Coolers, design and specification. (1996).

  • Loy Yang A Power Station- Auxiliary Cooling Water System de-coupling investigation. The system was analysed to separate the entire auxiliary cooling system from the main system, involving the provision of new pumping plant, heat exchangers and pipework modifications (1996).

  • BHP No 24 Turbo-Blower Seawater Cooling Water System with 900mm vertical pumps, investigation of pumping system, hydraulic design, and a proposal to install a condenser bypass system (1996).

  • Eraring Power Station replacement of eight 600mm seawater automatic self cleaning filters Investigation, design, produce specification and analyse tenders. Value of project $3m (1995).

  • Liddell Power Station Degassed Water Supply System (1994).  Review of design which was experiencing pump failures.

  • Munmorah Power Station Auxiliary Cooling Water System Upgrade Design and Specification of works, including new pumping stations and pipework distribution system. Project value $4m. (1994)

  • Newport Power Station (Victoria), Seawater Cooling Water System Analysis of pumping system, and provision of a new oil cooler design to prevent oil discharges to the estuary (1994).

  • Vales Point Power Station Auxiliary Cooling Water System Review of Hydraulic Design (1994).

  • Munmorah Power Station Cooling Water Bypass System Design and Specification. This bypass was built so that the 6000 L/s pumps could be used for attemperating duty, bypassing the operating condensers (1993).

  • Vales Point Power Station.  Hydraulic investigation, design, calculation of pump head, specification and administration of contract for a Seawater Attemperating Pumping Station (1991 to 1992)

  • Munmorah Power Station 66 inch Seawater Circulating Water Pumps (1989), Investigation, hydraulic design , writing of Specification and tender analysis (1991).

  • Liddell Power Station Design of Condensate Pumping System This was an investigation into poor pumping performance of the condensate pumping system. The investigation recommended replacement control valves for the sum of $0.6m (1990).

  • Vales Point Power Station 2.1m Debris Filters to filter seawater.  Investigation, design, specification and administration of contract for four new filters. Contract Value $3m. (1990)

  • Munmorah Power Station Debris Filters and On-line Tube Cleaning System Contract administration (1986 to 1989).

  • Munmorah Power Station Rehabilitation of Unit 4 Turbo-Generator and Auxiliary Plant.  Administration of contract (1988 to 1989).

  • Munmorah Power Station Re-tubing of main condensers. The work included investigation, production of specification, and administration of contract (1986). 

  • Barnard River Water Supply Project Involving 2 x 3 MW Pumps and 2 x 6 MW Pumps Administration of contract (1983).

  • Eraring Power Station Boiler Feed Pumps.   Assistance with administration of Contract (1981).

  • Eraring Power Station, 2.1m diameter Seawater Strainers, 2.1m diameter Isolating Valves and Flow Reversal valves, 2.1m diameter Administration of contract (1980).

  • Eraring Power Station -On-line Tube Cleaning Systems 2.1m diameter for seawater cooling system on 660 MW Turbo-generator Administration of contract (1980).

  • Eraring Power Station – Seawater Circulating Water Pumps, 2.6m diameter -  write specification, and administration of contract. Contract Value $6m (1979)

  • Eraring Power Station - Circulating Water System Hydraulic Design Assistance with design calculations. (1978 to 1979).

1974 to 1977       Australian Atomic Energy Commission. Position held - Engineer working on Reactor Rigs
Duties:

Professional Engineer--Provision of engineering services for research projects associated with HIFAR reactor. The work involved the design of rigs to be installed in the reactor, along with radiation shielding and associated mechanical equipment.  During this time I undertook the 10th Australian Nuclear Technology Course.

1971 to 1974  Sydney Water Board
Position held:  Investigation Engineer, Water Branch
Duties:

Investigation and design of water supply projects involving pipelines, network systems, water distribution systems and pumping stations. This involved computer analysis techniques.
