GENERAL PUMPING SYSTEM DESIGN ADVICE

John McAndrew has extensive experience in the hydraulic design of pumping stations, and associated plant such as pipelines, valves and filtration plant. This experience has been obtained on water supply projects of all types, and also from power station pumping projects, and includes the following:
  • feasibility studies
  • hydraulic design of pumping systems
  • waterhammer and surge studies
  • specification of plant and equipment
  • tender evaluation.

John has also administered many engineering contracts, both for major new plant, and also for rehabilitation works.

The power station experience includes large power station critical pumps, such as the circulating water pumps, high pressure feed pumps, and condensate pumps.

John is also experienced in the use of hydraulic computer analysis programmes such as PIPES, and AFT Fathom, for steady state flows, and with FLOWMASTER and BENTLY HAMMER which are used for dynamic analyses.

John was the Lead hydraulic design engineer for the design and waterhammer analysis for the following major pumping station projects:

  • Eraring Power Station Attemperating Pumping Station in NSW with a flow rate of 20 m3/s,
  • Prospect Raw Water Pumping Station in Sydney pumping up to 16 m3/s into the Sydney water supply,
  • The circulating water cooling systems for Bluewaters, WA, Callide “C” (Qld) and Tarong North Power Stations, (Qld)
  • The pumping station for the Penrith Lakes Canoe Slalom Course (Sydney), which was used for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
John started out in the early 1970s working at Sydney Water learning pumping system design, followed by a stint at the Australian Atomic Energy Commission as a Project Engineer. Following this was 25 years at Pacific Power International, and 10 years as a consultant with Aurecon Consulting Engineers in Sydney.

Today John has started Efficient Pumping Pty Ltd, a consultancy which provides design and advice on pumping systems and associated works such as pipelines and valves. John is available to help design pumping systems, to supplement your design teams, or to provide a checking and verification service.
